2짧은 기사 읽기
Most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep a night, according to many health experts. Yet a large number of people regularly get less than that.
Sleep is not simply time when the body switches off. While we sleep, the brain sorts through the day's memories and the body repairs itself. People who sleep well often find it easier to concentrate and to control their mood.
So why do so many of us sleep badly? Stress is one common reason. Another is the light from phones and laptops, which can make the brain think it is still daytime. Drinking coffee late in the afternoon can also keep people awake.
Experts suggest a few simple habits. Try to go to bed and get up at the same time every day, even at weekends. Keep the bedroom dark, quiet and cool. Put screens away about an hour before bed, and do something relaxing instead, such as reading a book.
If you still cannot sleep after twenty minutes or so, it may help to get up and do something calm for a while.
Good sleep, it seems, is not a luxury. It is one of the foundations of good health.
