2짧은 기사 읽기
Many cities around the world are trying to get more people on bicycles. In some places, the number of cyclists has grown quickly over the past ten years.
Why are cities interested in cycling? First, bicycles do not produce exhaust fumes, so they can help to keep the air cleaner. Second, cycling is good exercise. Riding to work for twenty minutes a day is an easy way to stay active. Third, bicycles take up much less space than cars, which can reduce traffic on busy roads.
However, many people say they feel unsafe riding next to fast cars and lorries. For this reason, some cities are building separate cycle lanes. These lanes are protected from traffic by a kerb or a low wall.
Bike-sharing schemes are also popular. Users can unlock a bicycle with an app, ride it across town and leave it at another docking station.
Not everyone is happy about the changes. Some drivers and shop owners worry that new cycle lanes remove parking spaces. City planners say they need to listen to everyone and find a fair balance.
For now, one thing is clear: in many cities, the humble bicycle is back in fashion.
