Getting recycling right

재활용이 제대로 되려면 무엇이 필요한지, 그리고 재활용보다 앞선 방법을 다룬 기사예요.

Every day, households throw away large amounts of rubbish. Much of it could be recycled, but a surprising amount still ends up in landfill.

Recycling means turning used materials into new products. Glass bottles can be melted down and made into new bottles. Paper can become cardboard boxes, and some plastic bottles can be turned into fibres for clothing.

The problem is that recycling only works when materials are sorted properly. A greasy pizza box or a yoghurt pot that has not been rinsed can spoil a whole load of paper or plastic. Workers at recycling centres often have to remove items that should never have been put in the bin.

Local councils are trying to make the rules clearer. Many now print simple pictures on bins to show what goes where. Some also collect food waste separately, so that it can be turned into compost.

Experts say that recycling is only one part of the answer. It is even better to reduce what we buy and to reuse things where possible, for example by carrying a refillable water bottle.

As one simple slogan puts it: reduce, reuse, then recycle.
