For many office workers, the daily commute has changed. Instead of travelling to the office five days a week, a growing number of people now work from home for at least part of the week.

Supporters of remote work point to several benefits. Employees save time and money on travel, and many say they can focus better without the noise of a busy office. Parents may find it easier to organise childcare.

But working from home is not perfect. Some people feel lonely and miss chatting with colleagues. Others find it hard to switch off at the end of the day, because their kitchen table has become their desk. Managers, meanwhile, worry that new staff learn more slowly when they cannot watch experienced colleagues at work.

As a result, many organisations have chosen a hybrid model. Staff come into the office on certain days for meetings and teamwork, and stay at home on other days for tasks that need quiet concentration.

Researchers are still studying the long-term effects. For now, it seems that the best arrangement depends on the job, the team and the person.
