Space exploration used to be the work of a small number of national space agencies. Today, more countries and private companies are sending rockets, satellites and robots beyond our planet.

Why explore space at all? Scientists want to answer big questions, such as how the solar system formed and whether life has ever existed anywhere else. Robotic rovers on Mars, for example, drill into rocks and search for signs that water once flowed there.

Space research also affects everyday life on Earth. Satellites help us to forecast the weather, find our way with maps on our phones and monitor forests, oceans and ice.

There are challenges, too. Missions are extremely expensive, and many take years to plan. Old satellites and broken pieces of rockets now circle the Earth as space debris, which could damage working equipment.

Several space agencies are planning to send astronauts back to the Moon and, one day, to Mars. These long journeys will require new ways to protect crews from radiation and to grow food far from home.

The next few decades could be an exciting time for exploration.
