Why does a good night's sleep help us learn?

01 / READ

Read for the argument, not every word.

Many students believe that the best way to prepare for a test is to stay up late and study a little longer. It feels responsible, and sometimes it is necessary. Yet an exhausted mind is a poor place to store new ideas. Research on sleep suggests that the brain keeps working while we rest, sorting the day's experiences and deciding what to keep.

During sleep, new memories that were fragile in the evening are often consolidated, so they become easier to recall the next morning. This is why a problem that seemed confusing at night can look clearer after breakfast. Sleep is not a break from learning; it is part of learning.

Families can easily overlook this, especially during busy exam weeks. But if we sacrifice sleep to gain an extra hour of study, we may lose more than we gain. A steady bedtime may be one of the simplest study habits of all.
